Notes to the Basic Sentences
1 Geburtsdatum und -ort = Geburtsuatum und Geburtsort. Germans often represent part of a compound only by a hyphen if it occurs in another compound closely preceding or following. cf. in Unit 18 Hals- Nasen- und Ohrenarzt (= Halsarzt, Nasenarzt und Ohrenarzt). 2 11.6.33 (elften sechsten dreiunddreissig). The numerical code for dates in German follows the same order as the unabbreviated date, i.e. day - month - year. The day and month symbols are ordinal numerals (elften Tag, sechsten Monat), so indicated by the per iod following the number.
3 Ostzone. The Eastern (Soviet Occupation) Zone is referred to by the Soviet occupation authorities as die Deutsche Demokratische Republik (DDR), and its population is obliged to use this name or abbreviation officially, although it is not recognized by the West and most Germans not living there refer to it informally as die Ostzone or simply die Zone. 4 SED. This party was created in the Soviet Occupation Zone in 1946 as a "union" of the Sozialdemokratische Partei Deutschlands (SPD) and the Kommunistische Partei Deutschlands (KPD).

The Strafregisterauszug is the extract or summary of court convictions applying to a particular individual. 7 The Führungszeugnis issued by a police headquarters lists all police charges, fines or jail sentences levied against a particular person for misdemeanors subject to police jurisdiction and not involving court proceedings.
