In the following drill new verb-preposition complexes are listed with a few sample sentences and their English equivalents. After practice as a vocabulary drill students should add sentences of their own to each verb-preposition group. a. Man kann darüber denken wie man One can think as one likes about it. will. b. 1. arbeiten an + Dative 'work on

a.	Are you working on a terribly important matter?	Arbeiten Sie an einer dringenden Sache?
b.	I heard he's working on a new novel.	Ich habe gehört, er arbeitet an einem neuen Roman.
c.	The plumber was working on the fauceL for two hours.	Der Klempner arbeitete zwei Stun-· den an dem Wasserhahn.
d.	How long will he still be working ')n it?	Wie lange wird er noch daran arbeiten?

2. denken an + Accusative think of, remember

a.	What are you thinking of?	Woran denken Sie?
b.	Do you (farn sg) still think of Charlotte Zacharias sometime?	Denkst du noch manchmal an Charlotte Zacharias?
c.	He was already thinking of repairing the radio hirnself.	Er hat schon daran gedacht, das Radio selbst zu reparieren.
d.	Remember to bring the road map along.	Denken Sie bitte daran, die Autokarte mitzubringen.

3. vermieten an + Accusative rent to (someone)

a.	Irented the apartment to Mrs. Martha Kaufmann.	Ich habe die Wohnung an Frau Martha Kaufmann vermietet.
b.	Mrs. Zacharias doesn't want to rent the room to the union official.	Frau Zacharias will das Zimmer nicht an den Gewerkschaftssekretär vermieten.
c.	My Aunt Charlotte has now rented her house to the Red Cross nurses.	Meine Tante Charlotte hat ihr Haus jetzt an die Schwestern vom Roten Kreuz vermietet.
d.	The house was rented to a doctor.	Das Haus wurde an einen Arzt vermietet.

4. hoffen auf + Accusative 'hope for, look for

a.	One always hopes for better times.	Man hofft immer auf bessere Zeiten.
b.	The children were hoping for a school outing.	Die Kinder hofften auf einen Schulausflug.
c.	For a long time he hoped for a 2h~ck from home.	Er hat lange auf einen Scheck von zu Hause gehofft.
d.	We're looking for the suits to be very cheap in the summer clearance sale.	Wir hoffen darauf, dass die Anzüge im Sommerschlussverkauf sehr billig sein werden.

5. hören auf + Accusative listen to, heed

a.	The children don't always obey their mother.	Die Kinder hören nicht immer auf die Mutter.
b.	Listen to me~	H'oren Sie auf mich~
c.	Dora never did what her Aunt Bertha said.	Dora hörte nie auf ihre Tante Berta.
d.	He didn't listen to [what] the doctor [said ].	Er hat nicht auf den Arzt gehört.

6. umschalten auf + Accusative switch over to

a.	The operator didn't switch over to the right department.	Die Zentrale hat nicht auf die richtige Abteilung umgeschaltet.
b.	Why didn't she switch the call over to my extension? (' ... to my phone?')	Warum hat sie das Gespräch nicht auf meinen Apparat umgeschaltet?
c.	I'm just switching the record player over to the tape recorder.	Ich schalte gerade den Plattenspieler auf das Tonbandgerät um.

7. rechnen auf + Accusative count on, rely on

a.	You can always count on me.	Auf mich können Sie immer rechnen.
b.	Better not count on these people.	Rechnen Sie lieber nicht auf diese Leute.
c.	We can't count on his carryi~g out his business obligations in this short time.	Wir können nicht darauf rechnen, dass er seine geschäftlichen Aufträge in dieser kurzen zeit ausführt.
d.	He's counting on being able to work at the Ministry of Economic Affairs.	Er rechnet darauf, im Wirtschaftsministerium arbeiten zu können.

8. sich erkundigen nach + Dative inquire, ask about

a.	Have you inquired about that at the Board of Health yet? (farn sg)	Hast du dich schon beim Gesundheitsamt danach erkundigt?
b.	Dr. Zacharias inquired about the new patient.	Dr. Zacharias erkundigte sich nach dem neuen Patienten.
c.	I'll ask about the trains.	Ich werde mich nach den Zügen erkundigen.
d.	Have you asked about a specialist yet? (farn sg)	Hast du dich schon nach einem Facharzt erkundigt?
e.	Please inquire about it (farn sg).	Erkundige dich bitte danach.

9. denken über + Accusative think oi, about;

a.	One can think as one likes about it.	Man kann darüber denken wie man will.
b.	I'm glad you have the same opinion of this student as I do.	Es freut mich, dass Sie über diesen Studenten genau so denken wie ich.
c.	What is your opinion about this?	Wie denken Sie darüber?
d.	What do people in Germany think about the negotiations?	Wie denkt man in Deutschland über die Verhandlungen?

10. sich freuen über + Accusative be glad, happy about, for

a.	We were all happy over Paula's visit.	Wir alle freuten uns über paulas Besuch.
b.	My son is very happy about the new bicycle.	Mein Sohn freut sich sehr über das neue Fahrrad.
c.	We're happy for every letter we get from him.	Wir freuen uns über jeden Brief, den wir von ihm bekommen.
d.	I was very glad [to have] her picture.	Ich habe mich sehr über ihr Bild gefreut.

11. schreiben über + Accusative 'write about

a.	The German author Emil Ludwig also wrote about Lincoln.	Der deutsche Schriftsteller Emil Ludwig schrieb auch über Lincoln.
b.	What are you writing about?	Worüber schreiben Sie?
c.	What did he write about me?	Was hat er über mich geschrieben?
d.	Thomas Mann wrote about his home town [of] Lübeck in this novel.	Thomas Mann schrieb in diesem Roman über seine Heimatstadt Lübeck.

12. sprechen über + Accusative talk about, speak about, discuss

a.	We were just discussing him.	Wir sprachen gerade über ihn.
b.	Charlotte doesn't like to talk about it.	Charlotte spricht nicht gern darüber.
c.	Professor Nordpol spoke about the German economy.	Professor Nordpol hat über die deutsche Wirtschaft gesprochen.
d.	Mrs. Wiegand has been talking for a whole hour about what all went wrong on the trip to Italy.	Frau Wiegand spricht schon eine ganze Stunde darüber, was alles auf der Reise nach Italien schiefging.

13. verstehen unter + Dative 'mean by

a.	At the hardware store they usually mean a tool when they speak of an "EnglMnder" .	Unter einem EnglMnder versteht man in einer Eisenwarenhandlung meistens ein Werkzeug.
b.	By a follow-up treatment one means the recuperation per iod ('time') after a treatment at a health resort.	Unter einer Nachkur versteht man die Erholungszeit nach einer Kur.
c.	What do you mean by a follow-up treatment?	Was verstehen Sie unter einer Nachkur?
d.	I mean something else when I say (or hear) that.	Darunter verstehe ich etwas anderes.

14. sich vorstellen unter + Dative imagine (something) to be

a.	What do you think a 'Landrat' is?	Was stellen Sie sich unter einem Landrat vor?
b.	I can't imagine what that iso	Darunter kann ich mir nichts vorstellen.
c.	I didn't think a health resort was going to be like this.	Ich habe mir unter einem Kurort etwas anderes vorgestellt.
d.	What do you think a 'Nachkur' is?	Was stellen Sie sich unter einer Nachkur vor?

15. sprechen von + Dative speak of, talk about (mention)

a.	No, your name didn't come up.	Nein, von Ihnen haben wir nicht gesprochen.
b.	What were you talking about?	Wovon sprachen Sie?
c.	He's always talking about hirnself.	Er spricht immer von sich.
d.	He mentioned that he was planning to drive to the Weserbergland. UNlT lE	Er hat davon gesprochen, dass er ins Weserbergland fahren wollte. BASIC COURSE GERMAN H:. führen zu + Dative - "lead to"
e.	What will that lead to?	Wozu führt das?
f.	The discussion led to a long parley.	Die Diskussion führte zu einer langen Verhandlung.
g.	Our negotiations produced no result.	Unsere Verhandlungen haben zu keinem Ergebnis geführt.
h.	His many business obligations led to his having to put off his trip.	Seine vielen geschäftlichen Aufträge führten dazu, dass er seine Reise aufschieben müsste.
